Four undergraduate students from the California Institute of Technology have been awarded Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships for the 2001–2002 academic year, the Goldwater Foundation has announced.
The students are Agedi Boto, a junior chemical engineering major from Baltimore, Maryland; Paul Choi, a sophomore chemistry major from Webster, New York; Betty Hong, a junior biology major from Bridgewater, New Jersey; and Benjamin B. Mathews, a sophomore physics major from Dallas, Texas.
The four Caltech students are among the 302 sophomores and juniors from the 50 states and Puerto Rico who received the scholarships this year. Sophomore recipients receive $7,500 per year for their junior and senior years, while juniors receive $7,500 for their senior year. The scholars, selected on the basis of academic merit, were chosen from 1,164 science, mathematics, and engineering students nominated by the faculties of their universities and colleges.
The scholarship program was created to honor the late Senator Barry M. Goldwater, and is considered the premier undergraduate academic award in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering. Now in its 13th year, the program has awarded 3,323 scholarships worth approximately $33 million.
The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency that was established by Public Law 99-661 on November 14, 1986.
