Caltech Faculty Named Top Innovators
Hailing from nine different countries, nominees were chosen for their contributions in transforming the nature of technology in industries such as biotechnology, computing, energy, medicine, manufacturing, nanotechnology, telecommunications, and transportation. This year's TR100 includes innovators from well-known companies and institutions, such as Hewlett-Packard, Intel, and Lucent Technologies as well as emerging businesses such as Barcelona Design, MicroCHIPS, Scale Eight, and Seven Networks.
Effros, who is the director of the Caltech data compression laboratory, conducts research on information compression and communication. With the growth of network applications like the Internet and sensor networks comes an increased need for efficient compression techniques for systems with many information sources and receivers. Compression techniques developed for network systems can, for example, take advantage of the redundancy between separately generated sources. The results are savings in resources like time, bandwidth, and power.
Quake's work involves biophysics and microfluidic devices. He uses biological molecules as model systems for studying physics. For example, he manipulates molecules of DNA with optical tweezers in order to develop precision methods of measuring small forces. His work in microfluidics has led to the development of lab on a chip devices that will enable advances in biology and medicine.

The TR100 will be publicly honored on May 23 during an all-day conference and symposium at MIT.
