Bicycle Thefts

Caltech Notification
Campus Security has received six (6) reports of bicycle thefts in the past eleven (11) days across campus. This is a reminder that it is important to take security precautions whenever parking a bicycle anywhere, on or off campus.
Campus Security recommends:
- Using Diamond-rated locks. This is the highest rating for bicycle locks.
- Using more than one lock when possible.
- Avoiding cable locks.
- Secure both the frame and both wheels to a solid object.
- Be mindful of locking to posts or other objects that would allow a thief to simply lift the bike up and over the top of the post.
- If possible, do not leave bikes unattended for long periods of time.
- When locking up your bike, the lock should fit tightly to avoid leverage attacks, a technique in which a thief inserts a long tool into the 'U' of the lock and twists it, breaking the lock open. The lock should be off the ground to make cutting the lock more difficult.
It is not clear at this time whether these thefts are connected, but Pasadena Police has been notified. Immediately report any suspicious activity to Campus Security at 626 395 5000.
