Caltech Mourns Passing of Kenny Lau

November 24, 2025

To: The Caltech Community
From: Thomas F. Rosenbaum, Sonja and William Davidow Presidential Chair and Professor of Physics

With great sadness, I write to tell you that one of Caltech's postdoctoral scholars, Kenny Lau, died Saturday evening at the hospital from injuries sustained in a traffic accident. Kenny, an experimental cosmologist in the Division of Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy, has been a member of the Caltech community since 2021, first joining as a visiting graduate student and then, for the last two years, as a postdoctoral scholar. He sustained fatal injuries when a vehicle struck him Saturday evening while he was crossing a street near his home in Pasadena.

Kenny's passing is a profound blow to our community. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues across Caltech who are learning this news.

As an Institute we strive to support and care for one another. I encourage those who may need support in light of this tragedy, or to deal with prior losses during the coming holiday season, to connect with professionals in Student Wellness Services and the Staff and Faculty Consultation Center.
