Update on Caltech's Response to Burglary in Catalina Apartment
November 22, 2022

To: The Campus Community
From: Hampton Cantrell, Chief of Security and Kevin Gilmartin, Vice President for Student Affairs

On Sunday evening, Caltech Security issued a timely warning to all members of the campus community to report a burglary at the 362 S. Catalina apartments. The burglary occurred while three residents were in the apartment; the unknown suspect is reported to have fled when confronted by one of the residents.

This incident is unsettling. We take seriously our responsibility to support proactively the safety and well-being of our community, and we write today to provide an update on the Institute's response.

Since the burglary, the following steps have been taken:

  • Caltech Security has increased patrols, including vehicle and foot patrols, of the Catalina properties, the Wilson parking structures, and other Institute-managed properties on South Wilson Avenue, San Pasqual Street, and South Catalina Avenue. The patrols will continue through the holiday weekend and will be reevaluated as necessary.
  • Caltech Security and Student Affairs, which oversees the graduate student properties, are evaluating the physical security systems in place and assessing opportunities for enhancements that may include additional lighting, cameras, and locks.

At the same time, Caltech Security continues to work with the Pasadena Police Department in the investigation of this crime and requests assistance from the Caltech community. If you wish to leave an anonymous tip please call (888) 395-8787.

The health and safety of all Caltech community members is a priority. If you encounter or observe a suspicious person or anyone who makes you uncomfortable, go to a safe location and call Campus Security immediately. Call 5000 on campus, (626) 395-5000 from your cell phone, or 911 if you are off campus.

Thank you for your vigilance and care for your colleagues.
