Campus Apartment Burglary Reported

Timely Warning - Burglary - November 20, 2022


Incident
On November 20, 2022, at 5:32 p.m., Caltech Security responded to a report of a burglary at 362 S. Catalina apartments. The reporting party stated that while he and two of his roommates were home someone entered their apartment. The reporting party stated that while he barricaded himself in his bedroom looking for something to defend himself with, the suspect entered an unoccupied bedroom and took cash left by a student who was out of town for the weekend. The reporting party confronted the suspect who then fled the apartment.

Description
The suspect is described as an African American Male, approx. 40-50 years of age, 5'8 – 5' 10" tall, heavy set, bald, and with a white beard. The suspect was wearing glasses, a dark jacket, dark pants or shorts. The suspect was carrying a crowbar.
Pasadena Police were notified and responded. A search of the area was conducted by Pasadena Police and Caltech Security. No one matching the description was located. High visibility patrols are continuing.

Suggestions
Victims of crimes are never to blame for criminal activity. However, there are some precautions that can be taken in order to protect yourself and your belongings from theft and/or facilitate the recovery of your stolen property. Caltech Security encourages you to follow the following tips:

  • Immediately notify Caltech Security at 626-395-5000 or by dialing 5000 from any campus phone if you believe a crime is occurring, has occurred, or is about to occur.
  • Whenever possible, do not confront suspects. Take shelter in a safe location.
  • Lock your office and residential doors and windows whenever you are leaving (even if only for a minute or two). Assure that the locks are in good working order.
  • When entering or exiting an office, make sure the door closes tightly behind you. 
  • Report person(s) acting in a suspicious, alarming, or unsafe manner.


Be aware of and report individuals who try to "tailgate" to enter secure buildings and restricted areas without keys or the proper credentials by slipping in behind someone else.Caltech Security wants to remind the Caltech community that we are located in an urban setting and share many of the crime and safety issues that exist in any city.
