Social identity factors are often considered inconsequential or irrelevant to STEM professional achievement, but bias and structural inequality linked to marginalized identities can hinder productivity, satisfaction, and success. Underrepresentation is just one factor that reduces visibility, and often, sexual orientation is a hidden characteristic.
